USAO students gain real-world experience with Optum Energy Solutions
BY ZACHARY MCGREW USAO News Bureau

Current chemistry students Jose Medina, Jordan Rhodes and Jaclyn McCasland are gaining real-world experience as interns, and recent graduate Matthew Tsonetokoy has been hired full-time for the company. All four are working in the quality assurance/quality control lab running daily tests on Optum’s manufactured products, as well as helping to develop test procedures and processes.

“These students were all eager to pursue a career related to their degree,” said Jackie Henderson, project manager for Optum Energy Solutions. “In our industry, we do not always have standardized testing procedures to measure the performance of our product, so in-house development is necessary. I amimpressed with their chemistry knowledge and ability to learn new techniques as well as their willingness to take on responsibility and ownership of their work.”

Working with the Chickasha Economic Development Council over the past two years, Optum Energy saw that the community could provide an appropriate workforce and access to major highways and railroads. The new facility could bring up to 80 full-time jobs to the area and the company sees a clear benefit to having well-prepared students close at hand.

“I graduated with a chemistry degree from USAO and stay in contact with the professorsthere, Dr. Chan-Yu-King in particular,” said

Henderson. “When I began the hiring process for the lab, I contacted him for recommendations on students who would be approaching graduation and looking for employment. It is difficult to find chemists in this area, so I hope to continue a relationship with USAO’s science department to find quality job candidates as well as students looking to gain valuable lab experience that we can mentor.”

Based out of Houston, Optum Energy Solutions is a manufacturer and supplier of pipeline drag reduction solutions, ensuring maximum efficiency in the transportation of oil across the United States and has distributors in several other countries. They have invested over $20 million in their Chickasha location, which was formerly the Delta Faucet building west of town.
